Memphis takes a pass on Bell City's Bogan

It's looking less likely that Bell City senior Will Bogan, who committed to the University of Memphis in February, will play for the Tigers.

First, the talk around Memphis heading into November was that the Tigers had lost interest because Bogan hadn't developed over the summer as much as Memphis coach John Calipari expected. Then on signing day, the Tigers signed four players, including two - Philadelphia brothers Marcus and Markieff Morris - who might instead attend prep school next season.

Then last week, sophomore Kareem Cooper returned to the team, ending speculation that he might leave and free up a scholarship after he was suspended for breaking team rules.

Calipari now has all 13 scholarships filled for next season and says his 2007-'08 team is set - assuming, of course, that none of the Tigers bolt for the NBA after this season.

  • Sikeston High School grad Blake DeWitt helped North Shore defeat Waikiki 5-1 for the championship of the Hawaii Winter Baseball League last week. DeWitt, who ended the summer schedule with the Los Angeles Dodgers' Double-A team in Jacksonville, Fla., was among a long list of MLB players sent to the offseason developmental league; he hit .216 with 4 RBI and a home run in 26 games.

I dont think Bogan has what it takes to play division I basketball in the first place.

I agree. Bogan will be lucky if a low level Jr. college expresses interest.

I agree after watching him play he is extremely lazy and by the looks of it did not work out that much over the summer. But I am sure some college will take him because he does have, the dreaded word, potential. He is a big and is moves fairly well for his size. But I wish him the best of luck and hope he shows us all wrong and brings pride to southeast missouri and give Coach B. a State ring.

What always stuck out to me was Bogan's ability to handle the rock. Other than that, however, I wasn't nearly as impressed as John Calipari apparently was. I think Bogan will end up at a small school ... or even worse, at no school at all. I've heard that he's gotten even lazier this season.

I can say as a witness, that Bogan has the ability to play at the next level. The question is if he has the heart and work ethic. He can handle the ball, and has great touch around the basket. The key for Will is to be strong taking it to the hoop. He has to want it. He could easily dominate this area and average 25 and 15 every game. The question is, does he want to?

After watching him play the answer is no he does not want it.

I THINK THAT MEMPHIS IS MAKING A MISTAKE. BOGAN IS NOT GETTING THE BALL IN THE POST. OTHER PLAYERS ON THE TEAM ARE SHOOTING THE BALL. NOT GIVING HIM A CHANCE TO SHOW HIS POST PLAY. HE SHOULD TOUCH THE BALL EVERY TIME THEY HAVE THE BALL ON OFFENSE. JUST LIKE TYLER HANDSBOUGH USE TO. TELL ME WHO CAN STOP 300 POUND MAN FROM POUNDING HIS WAY TO THE BASKET.ITS UP TO THE COACH TO TELL HIS PLAYERS TO GET BOGAN THE BALL.PLAYERS SHOOTING TAKESTHE BIG MAN OUT OF HIS GAME AND HE TENDS TO RELAX. IF YOU PUT BOGAN ON LIKE CHARLESTON WHERE HE IS REALLY FROM, YOU WILL GET MORE OUT OF BOGAN, BECAUSE THE COACH OF CHARLESTON WILL KNOW HOW TO USE HIM AND HE WILL GET THE BALL.WAIT TILL BELL CITY MEETS UP WITH CHARLESTON PRESSER ON "D" I BET THEY WILL BE LOOKING FOR BOGAN ALL NIGHT CAUSE THEY WONT GET OFF THOSE SHOTS ON CHARLESTONS GAURDS.

THE SURROUNDING PLAYERS OF BOGAN IS HURTING HIM. THEY DON'T GIVE HIM THE BALL ENOUGH. WHO IN CLASS ONE A COULD STOP THE 300 POUNDER FROM SCORING? HIS TEAM. HE IS TO TALENTED NOT TO GET THE BALL. HE IS THE SHAQ OF HIGHSCHOOL BASKETBALL. THE COACHES OF BELL CITY HAVE NOT WORK WITH THIS GUY THAT MUCH. THEIR PROGRAM IS NOT MADE TO MAKE A PLAYER STAND OUT. THE COACH HAS TO TELL HIS PLAYERS WHAT TO DO. IF BOGAN IS NOT THE GO TO MAN, BELL CITY WON'T WIN A CHAMPIONSHIP. IF YOU PUT BOGAN IN THE HANDS OF COACH MAC OR PAUL HALE, I BET BOGAN IS A DIVISION 1 BASKETBALL PLAYER. THE COACH HAS TO HELP BRING OUT A PLAYER BEST. THIS TJ FROM CHARLESTON

To be honest i dont think Bogans has what it takes to play Div. 1 ball, he is lazy and he dont want it.I dont think he has any potential either, but he is just so big he will play at a jr. level.

TJ? I guess you were trying to say, "This is T.J. from Charleston." Let me explain something TJ...it doesn't matter who the coach is if a player doesn't want to work hard and get better. You are right about the fact that Bogan could be a great player and he should touch the ball every time down the floor. But this has nothing to do with coaching. Bogan has to want it. Bottom line. He needs to clear the paint and demand the ball. He does none of this, therefore they can't get him the ball. Even if he doesn't touch it, he should be able to get plenty of offensive rebounds and put backs to get 30 a game. With all of this said, don't tell us, with that horrible grammar, that it is Coach Brandtner's fault. I have had the opportunity to play under Coach and he is a great basketball coach with extensive knowledge of the game. He cares, more than anybody, about Will as a person and a player. He wants Will to play college ball and he wants Will to succeed. Don't ever blame a coach if you don't know the situation. Obviously you have never dealt with a kid who can't see how good he can be and could care less. They should have a spell and grammar checker on here for idiots like you.

Ill tell you who can stop a 300 pound kid, effort. Bogan does not want to do anything but stand under the basket and wait for someone to give him the ball, and when on D, if anyone comes close, he'll just foul. You may think I dont know what I am talking about, but I have played against him. Although he is a strong kid, a little hustle up and down the floor makes him crawl in a hole and hide. He is a good high school player, but doesnt have near enough of what it takes to play anywhere else.

I guess we'll find out this season what Bogan is really made of. GossipKing, I'm with you on the Coach B backup. I also played for Brandter, and he is one of the most intelligent coaches I've seen or played for. And it wouldn't matter who is coaching Bogan, TJ. If Paul Hale was his coach, Bogan wouldn't even play because he's too lazy. Give Coach B some credit. At least he's trying to work with him.

IM NOT TRYING TO TAKE ANYTHING AWAY FROM THE COACH OF BELL CITY. I JUST THINK UNDER A DIFFERENT COACH HE WOULD BE A BETTER PLAYER. HOW I KNOW? WHEN BOGAN COMES TO CHARLESTON AND PLAYS A PICK UP GAME THE PEOPLE ON HIS TEAM BRING SOMETHING OUT OF HIM THAT BELL CITY HAS YET TO SEE. IM JUST SAYING UNDER A DIFFERENT PROGRAM BOGAN COULD BE A BETTER PLAYER. WHEN I WATCH HIM PLAY, MOST OF HIS POINTS ARE OFF OF REBOUNDS. MAYBE THEY NEED TO MAKE MORE PLAYS THAT INVOLE HIM, INSTEAD OF PASSING THE BALL AROUND THE PERIMETER UNTIL YOU CAN FORCE UP A THREE POINT SHOT AND EXPECT THE BIG MAN TO GET A REBOUND THAT BOUNCE FAR OFF THE RIM. I DONT THINK SO. THATS NOT THE WAY IT WORKS. SOMEONE SAID THAT HE NEEDS TO CLEAR OUT THE LANE SO HE CAN GET THE BALL."TRUE"
THAT IS THE COACHES JOB TO TELL HIS GAURDS TO GET IT TO HIM, AND IT IS THE COACHES DUTY TO SHOW HIM HOW TO CLEAR OUT THE LANE IF HE DOESNT KNOW HOW. IF HE CANT GET THAT RIGHT SIT HIM DOWN. WHO EVER COACH B. IS GOOD LUCK THIS SEASON. DONT MIND WHAT I SAY, BECAUSE EVERY ONE HAS THEIR OWN THOUGHTS, AND IM JUST SPEAKING MINE. WHO EVER LEFT THAT GAMMER MESSAGE (YOU KNOW WHAT YOU CAN DO FOR ME! IF YOU DONT KNOW COME TO CHARELSTON AND I WILL SHOW YOU. AND THATS REAL! SORRY I DIDNT GO TO GRAMMER SCHOOL OR DIDNT PROOF READ IT BEFORE I SENT. IT.
