The area's first poll of the season has a familiar ring

Our first weekly boys basketball poll of the season speaks volumes about the strength of the SEMO Conference.

First is Sikeston. Charleston is second. Notre Dame is third. Fourth is Jackson.

They're the top four seeds in this week's SEMO Conference Tournament and also Nos. 1-4 in our first SemoSportsWeb.com Top 20 poll of the season. The rankings list the region's top 20 boys basketball teams and is down the right side of our home page.

The rankings also show the strength of our region's smaller schools this season. Besides traditional powerhouse programs Charleston and Scott County Central, small schools -- including Clarkton, South Iron, Bell City, Puxico and Neelyville -- rank among the area's top 20, ahead of several of the biggest schools in Southeast Missouri.

After you look at the poll, you'll have your own opinions. Who got left out? Who's overrated? Your input, along with the opinions of other local basketball enthusiasts, coaches and athletes, is taken into consideration each week before we come up with our top 20, so don't hold back. Click on our feedback page and send your thoughts, or e-mail me at jhall@semosportsweb.com.

How can Perryville be 3-0 as of Wed Dec 6th when they got throttled by Notre Dame in the Woodland Tourney? How can Oran be in the poll ahead of Saxony with no quality wins? [Risco?, Twin Rivers?way down, Kelly(only win against a JV team)] 5th place in their own tournament, but 20th in SEMO, I doubt it. What about Advance that was 3rd at Oran? What about Bernie that barely lost to Puxico? Plenty of other area teams should be in before a few that you have in this.

Oh, and SCC can't be undefeated since they lost to Malden.

You're right, Perryville and Scott County Central both do have a loss each, although that won't affect their standing in the poll this week. Good points about Advance and Bernie, but the bottom five spots were almost a toss-up, and Advance, Bernie and a couple of others were among those considered. Advance was a lock for the top 20 before they lost in a lopsided game Tuesday to Bell City.

I'm not sure what constitutes the poll's area, but if you are including DeSoto, as you did in the poll, they should be MUCH higher. They should be a 6-8 ranked team, not down at the bottom below some of those teams that you have listed. They were a district champion last year and return nearly every contributor from that team, plus gained a talented transfer from Festus.

Who is the transfer? Is it Lawrence??(sp?) If so that would make Desoto pretty tuff... But I could understand why they may be ranked lower then you would like... no one really around here gets to watch them and just know that the past three years teams from district one, Dexter, Notre Dame, and Sikeston, have walked over whomever came out of that district. But in Desoto's defense one of better teams I have seen in high school history was the Desoto Dragons of '02, I believe that was the year atleast. And I am sure they are tuff this year.

It looks like ND wrapped up the number 2 seed for the Christmas Tournament. ND can put up some points in a hurry. If they can find a way to stop people, they will be tough to beat. I love seeing ND put it to Jackson and their beloved Darrin Scott.
