Our first poll of the season has a familiar team at No. 1

It really does seem like old times with Scott County Central at No. 1 again.

Our first SemoSportsWeb preaseason Top 25 basketball poll was posted on our home page today after several days of conferring with area coaches, fans and athletes, not to mention hours of looking through stats, records and rosters for more than 80 local boys basketball teams.

The consensus? Well, there really wasn't one. Notre Dame was mentioned as the No. 1 team among plenty of folks heading into the season. Sames goes for Charleston, Jackson, Sikeston and Festus. All them got a push for the No. 1 spot before the final poll was settled.

That kind of split vote should lead to another anything-goes season much like the one we saw last year, and don't be surprised to see teams like Festus, Poplar Bluff, Hayti and Cape Girardeau Central climb back into the top tier of local basketball after sub-par seasons a year ago.

Just like last year, our Top 25 poll (expanded from a Top 20 poll last season) will be updated every week. And as always, leave us your feedback on our message board, through an e-mail (jhall@semosportsweb.com) or on our MySpace page (myspace.com/semosportsweb) — it just might be enough to sway our rankings next time around.

• Southeast's football season is finished, and only one team from the region remains alive in the high school football playoffs (that team is Thayer, which plays at noon Saturday for the Class 1 title in St. Louis). But if you're up for more college football in person instead of on TV, Southern Illinois (10-1) hosts Eastern Illinois (8-3) in Carbondale in the first round of the FCS (formerly Division I-AA) playoffs at time to be determined Saturday.

I'm dumbfounded at how Notre Dame is not the number one teem seeded. I understand that Scott County is loaded and very talented. Yet, Notre Dame is a returning Class 4 state runner up with four starters back and many other key players. Scott County is a Class 1 district runner up. Explain this to me Jamie?? I hope semoball.com doesn't make this same mistake.

And Charleston ahead of Sikeston and Jackson. What did you base this on? Are you trying to be wrong?

Are you going to do a SEMO girls poll??

Ours is like any other poll -- purely speculation and educated guesses (or uneducated, depending on who you ask).

I see your point about Notre Dame being No. 1 -- I wouldn't argue that at all. But it's not far-fetched to say Scott Co. Central is a potential No. 1 when Ronnie Cookson is running the show.

As for Charleston, Jackson and Sikeston -- depending on the day, any of those teams could beat the other.

As for the SEMO girls poll: Probably not this season. My goal is to have a weekly Top 25 girls poll (as well as rankings for other sports) next season.

What I think! My Top 6
1.Notre Dame- They will be the same team from last year, but harder to beat.
2.Sikeston- got a point to prove from last years heart breaker
3.Jackson- can be #2 and can beat both teams above.
4.Charleston- will shock people any night.
5.NMCC- Hard work will win them ballgames.
6.SCC- They got talent, but Can't bang with these teams night in and night out.
