SEMO sets its 2009 football schedule

Southeast's football schedule is nearly firm for 2009, and the Redhawks are expected to make it official with an announcement soon.

Among the questions likely to come up before the season kicks off Sept. 5: Can Southeast find its defense, which went MIA for most of last season? Can the Redhawks keep focus on the game and out of the courts (case in point: Houston Lillard's public indecency charge)?

And maybe biggest question of all: Just how hot is that seat getting for coach Tony Samuel, whose teams have posted a combined three-year record of 11-23 — including last year's 4-8 season that included two wins in overtime. Will another 3- or 4-win season be enough to earn Samuel a fifth year leading the program?

This year's schedule highlights: an opener against Quincy University on Sept. 5, a payday game (likely worth $200,000 or more for Southeast) at Cincinnati on Sept. 12, and two final games at home against the Redhawks' biggest rivals — Nov. 14 against Murray State, and Nov. 21 against SIU-Carbondale.

None of this year's opponents are new to the schedule, but a couple haven't been around in a while. Southeast last played Quincy in 2001 (a 38-6 win), Southern Illinois in 2005 (a 58-23 loss), and Cincinnati in 2007 (a 59-3 loss).

The full schedule:

Sept. 5 — vs. Quincy
Sept. 12 — at Cincinnati
Sept. 19 — vs. Eastern Illinois
Sept. 26 — at UT-Martin
Oct. 3 — at Tennessee State
Oct. 10 — vs. Austin Peay
Oct. 17 — idle
Oct. 24 — at Tennessee Tech
Oct. 31 — at Eastern Kentucky
Nov. 7 — Jacksonville State
Nov. 14 — Murray State
Nov. 21 — SIU-Carbondale

How many wins do you see there? I see up to 6 but I am going to give them 3.

Semo is set to make 275,000 from Cincy this season.

I was thinking SEMO would get in the $250,000 range for playing at Cincinnati, so $275,000 is even better.

As for wins, I wouldn't be completely surprised to see a .500 season, or maybe a game below that.

My hunch is that a .500 season would save Tony Samuel's job, but I'm not sure if anything less than that would do it.

Unless Semo goes winless or only wins 1 game, Quincy, Tony S. will be back for 2010 which would be his 5th and final year of his contract. I just don't see them firing him with 1 year left if he wins 3-5 games which is his norm. I think the thing that might save him is the new locker rooms. They might allow him to coach another year with new locker rooms. My opinion on what will happen is...he coaches 2009 and 2010 and they don't renew his contract and after 2010.

I posted htis on Marks blog....

QUINCY (has to be a win...we would think they are d-II for Christ sakes)

EIU (they are coming off a down year and this is a home game for us, I would give us a punchers chance)

AP (Homecoming, if we get the crowd we had last year this should be a win)

@ TECH (This game is coming off Semo's bye week and this is again a winnable game)

JACK STATE. (This one has some extenuating circumstances...Jack. State could get banned from post season play this year due to their low APR. If they get banned I fully expect a half-ass effort in many of their games since they don't have much to play for. This is a home game for Semo so based on that....I could see a win. If Jack. State stays out of trouble then this is a loss and Ryan P will roll our asses again)

MURRAY (A program equal with us. I know we have lost to them the past 2 years where Griffith has out coaches Samuel (what else is new) but this could also be a win.)

There are our 6 best chances for a win. I don’t see us winning or even coming close in the remaining 5 games

@ Cincy
@ Martin
@ State
@ EKU
SIU

I will go on record right to say this is a 3 win-8 loss year.

I think we finish 5 and 6. We will then have a winning record the next year. Samuel brought in a pretty good recruiting class this season, his best yet.

3 wins, 4 with a break or two our way. DL is still too much of a weakness to really compete.

Shafer doesn't have the funds to fire Samuel with a year left on his contract. I could see, come December, a scenario where Samuel leaves on his own and goes somewhere as an Asst. I bet Nebraska would hire him as an Asst in some capacity.

0-11... and if at all possible, they will find a way to screw something up on their bye week. Seeing these guys and their off field "habbits", I dont even know how they can compete on this level.

Joker,

I will give Tony S. the benefit of the doubt. I am not saying they will ever be a conference contender but I hope he is able to get some talent in here and win more than 4 games a year. I also agree with you, I hope he brings in better people on the field too.

don't any of your bloggers have an opinion on Semo's basketball signings?

Jamie is waiting to see who Lindenwood signs before he chimes in.

None of Jamie's bloggers care about the signings because the new players aren't from Sikeston or Notre Dame.

"..waiting to see who Lindenwood signs.."

That was downright funny.

Seriously, it's been over a week and nobody has anything to say about Semo's incoming basketball players. Semosportsweb is sliding.

Leon Powell is a very good player, a bit small for a 4, but he is very active and a very smooth player. He has good hands to receive a pass in the paint and uses his quickness and hops to get to the basket against bigger players. He plays down low with the same sort of style that Reggie Gholson played -- skinny kid that would use his quickness to beat people. Powell is aggressive on the boards, but he can get pushed around a little if you get your body on him.

Marland Smith is a very interesting recruit. He could either be a steal or just another player - and that will depend on whether he can learn how to play the point. He's a tremendous shooter, I've been told that his game right now matches that of Kenard Moore when he was in HS, but Kenard didn't learn to play the point until his Sr year in college. Just think if Semo had had Kenard for 4 years and was able to teach him how to be an effective point guard and that is what you might have with Smith. If he can become a starting PG, with his shot and athleticism - he will be an OVC stud. But if he can't play the point he's just another 6'1 shooter at the 2G spot that will contribute but will never be a star.

Allison is okay and an improvement over Jones, Harris and Paradoski of late, but he isn't going to be an impact player. Again, a nice improvement, but nothing earth-shattering with him. He's better than we have had, but he's not Stokes-good. Not a bad player at all, but he isn't going to be all-conference either.

Miles is an interesting recruit also as he is another guy with potential. He handles the ball well for a 6'4 guy, but he can't knock down the outside shot - and there aren't many Wing players in the OVC that can't score from 3. His game is very similar to Herring at that age as he can play a sort of Point Forward position and can run and jump like crazy. He'll have a learning curve, and it will take awhile to learn how to play effective defense, but he has a nice ceiling if everything goes well for him over the next 2 years.

Logan Nutt is a bench player. I think he avg'd 5 ppg at West Plains, so that kind of tells you his role. He'll graduate and will keep his nose out of trouble while not being counted on to contribute, so that is nice.

If they get Stephon Weaver - that will be an excellent signing. Weaver would become the best player on the floor immediately for Semo. He will be the starter at the 2G and will be able to play a little point when needed. He will be a 2nd/3rd team All-OVC type of player next year and could challenge for 1st team his Sr year if he is surrounded with a little more talent by then. When Nutt signed Weaver a few years back, he really thought that he had a chance to start at ASU as a true FR and that he would be an all-conference level player for them.

There are some others they are still in the running for - unfortunately there are no big man impact players that I now of. They almost have to sign at least 1 more player to play down low, even if they aren't very good, just for the depth with practices and all.

Not many Semo fans care to discuss with Jamie anything that is Semo related. It is what it is.

What exactly do you want bloggers to write about regarding the new recruits? You've seen all the stats on them. Would you like them to travel down to Arkansas to scout the players out for you?

Stanly you bozo, these guys usually have some pretty good insight on things at Semo-especially Mark. I think they are a little better then just providing stats.
