The area's best sports program? The numbers say Notre Dame

For the second year in a row, the numbers point to Notre Dame as the best athletic program out of more than 80 in Southeast Missouri.

Notre Dame finished with 36 points in the annual SemoSportsWeb.com all-sports standings, 14.5 points ahead of runnerup Herculaneum. St. Vincent finished third, Festus fourth and Farmington, Sikeston and Valle in a tie for fifth.

Notre Dame clinched the No. 1 spot on the list when the school won the Class 3 state baseball championship.

Fifty-two of the region's 83 high schools earned points in the list, which awards points based on postseason success in each of the state's athletic competitions (10 points for a state title, 8 for second place, and so on). Click here to see the full list of all 52 schools and their ranking.

The list (at least the top two) is identical to last year, when Notre Dame won with 39 points and Herculaneum finished second with 22 (a 17-point edge). This year, Notre Dame finished with 36 points, and Herculaneum had 22.5.

You should have a Public division and a Private division. It isn't even fair to do it like this when some teams have their out of town players.

The state I live in now divides public and private school athletics, Missouri needs to get with the program

Here we go, crying about Notre Dame winning again.

As long as the state keeps public and private schools grouped together in the playoffs, it makes more sense to do the same thing here.

Now, as to whether the state should make two different systems for public and private schools, that's a whole different can of worms.

I guess that multiplier did nothing for ND haters. When are people just going to support local schools regardless of whether they are public or private? These are still kids from OUR community. If you want to see the public school rankings, just remove ND, Saxony, and St. Vincent from the picture. Nice work Jamie.

Not taking away anything from Notre Dame but definitely not a fan of private schools, the same recruiting people talk about that happens at Notre Dame does in fact happen here, but with the private schools sports split away from public there's no need for controversy. Congrats to Notre Dame.

You can "not like" private schools all you want when it comes to athletics, but make sure you specify that. If you have a problem with their academic standards and family enviornment, something must be wrong with you.

Regardless of the public/private controversy, you did a great job on this Jamie. This is the first time I've heard of such a thing.

Ok david I am entitled to an opinion just as much as the next person, and I went to a public school and what is a "family environment"? Most people I went to school with had a family. Or did u mean a good family environment? Because my school had good families too. I just don't believe anyone needs to pay an exorbate amount of money to get a great elementary and secondary education. I am proof of that. Also did I not just congratulate Notre Dame on their successful year in sports which by the way is alot for me coming from where I'm from lol. Yes Notre Dame has the best sports program, luckily the sports they had the most success in are the ones I don't follow though.

Anonymous - So you don't follow basketball, baseball, soccer, or cross country?

And you completely took Harry's comments too far. By no means was he saying that public schools don't have good families -- where did you even get that from? Please quit twisting things to make people look bad.

You are crazy to say ND has alot of success in baseball. Up until last year, and one state title back in the day, they have not been a threat.

Soccer will get theirs this year. They got beat in basketball, and probably will for the next ten years in that district.

No one cares about cross country

To answer your question James with the exception of basketball, no I don't follow the rest of those sports. If it's not football, basketball or track and field then no I generally have no interest in it. But on that basketball thing, Notre Dame got nothing in that. They lost to good ole Sikeston at districts this year so as far as I'm concerned when it comes to those other sports yeah Notre Dame is the best then.

Yeah Semosportsweb, good job. You've shown you can pucker up and kiss ND's ass better than anybody else in the state. Nice job.

Notre Dame is a school. Notre Dame plays in the same district as other public schools. They should be treated no differently. How come nobody throws a fit about Saxony? They have kids that go there from different towns...

Saying that Nd has not been a threat in baseball is not a true statement. They actually have 2 state championships in baseball. They always have stong teams and i believe they eliminated Sikeston in districts when they were supposed to have an unstobble team with priday and dewitt. And sikeston has only won 2 out of the lastfive district championships in basketball. Im not sayingthat other teams are bad orother schools are inferior but to say that notre dame isnt good at sports is ignorant

Yah, and ND also got beat by 15, 3 times the year before that when we went to state.

I beleive out of the last 15 or so DC's for baseball, Sikeston has won about 9 of them. Not to mention the Conf tourneys/outright titles.

If Sikeston had a better coach, they would have 3 or 4 titles I think

To some people, anything that isn't bashing Notre Dame is considered kissing their @ss. Jealousy, maybe?

As an SV alum I'm proud of our 3rd place finish, but we do recruit, we've got a couple kids from Biehle and Apple Creek. LOL.

As for ND I'm curious why they don't have a football team?
They are the only 3A program in the state with no squad. Kind of embarrasing I think.
I think they would be good fairly quickly if they had a team so I don't understand the hold up. Can anyone here help explain?

SValum, is ND really the only class 3 team in missouri without a football team? I have never heard that (I'm not questioning you, just curious). But ND is in different classes in different sports (4 in basketball, 2 in soccer, 3 in softball, 3 in baseball) so you can't really classified them as class 3. Regardless, it would be interesting to see ND's team. I like ND, but they would be terrible.

Notre Dame doesn't have a football team because they can't afford one right now. Not to mention setting up a field and all that goes with that. Some here may find it astonishing, but ND isn't made up of doctors and lawyers. My parents both work at SEMO; neither is faculty or executive staff. Some of my friends from high school have parents who work at daycares or other regular every day jobs. Some students come from better off families, but most come from plain-Jane hard working families. I know there has been talk of getting a football team for many years, but I think the cost factor causes people to be hesitant.

svalum said...

Yes they would be class 3 in football, and I feel if they hired a good coach they would be good in 3-5 years. I think they would get several of the Jackson kids.
As far as expense, yeah it takes a lot of start up money for football, but you can make a lot back on admission fees and sponserships for the games. The money we make off football helps fund our other sports programs, and its by far the most popular HS sport.

Anonymous said...

I would not say it is BY FAR the most popular high school sport. Around here, maybe. But not by far. I don't doubt it is by far the most popular in your town of Perryville, but that's just bc basketball isn't exactly St. Vincent or Perryville's bright spot.
