There's a story behind Sikeston's refusal to play Scott County Central

At least Sikeston High School has reasons for not putting Scott County Central on its boys basketball schedule.

None of them make much sense, but they're reasons.

The Standard-Democrat newspaper in Sikeston talked to several of the head honchos who have a hand in scheduling at Sikeston, ranked No. 2 in the SemoSportsWeb Top 25, and at Scott County Central, No. 1 in the poll. The story appears in today's edition.

First, the quick background in case you haven't heard: The teams haven't played since 1971 when Scott Central went to Sikeston and won in overtime. Sikeston officials say postgame violence — consisting of a fight in a women's bathroom and verbal taunts in the parking lot — were so bad that the rivalry would never resume. And it hasn't.

Sikeston athletic director Brent Keefer, superintendent Steve Borgsmiller and principal Tom Williams all recite similar lines and insist that the matchup won't happen under their watch, even saying that scheduling the 12-time state champions isn't much of a test.

According to the Sikeston schedule this season, Oran, a Class 1 program with one winning season in its past five seasons, is a better challenge. So are nearby small schools Kelly and Scott City. Both require more of a drive — and less of a workout — than the 9-mile trek south of Morley.

As for Scott County Central, coach Ronnie Cookson and superintendent Joby Holland want the game to happen. Granted, a Class 1 school playing a Class 4 program has little to lose and a lot to gain with the potential of a payday in gate receipts.

But Cookson likes a challenge, and a game at Sikeston is a playoff-caliber test for his team. And he's already tossed the bait at Sikeston — the Braves might have three open dates for Sikeston to choose from next season, and Cookson sounds eager to fill one of them with Sikeston.

Sikeston's old-guard excuses might have made sense in a 1971 environment, but they're not credible in 2008.

Let the game happen.

Isn't Sikeston a Class 4 team... Just checking Jamie

Yes, they are class 4. You should know by now this site is quick to speak negatively of Sikeston without checking simple facts.

Would be awesome, will not happen with the people at Sikeston right now responsible for scheduling. Players, coach, and all fans involved want this to happen THIS year, could happen this year, but it will not.

Just don't reschedule the Ste Gen game and schedule the game at the fieldhouse ASAP.

Lets settle this crap ASAP...And Jamie it is 1, 2, 3, 4 not 5... 4 comes after class 3...

Maybe you will get better at counting next year...

I'd would have to say Sikeston is scared to play SCC next because SCC would probably win. This year is when they should play with both being real good and the whole Porter vs. Porter thing. And before anybody gets their panies in a bunch and starts all that whining and crying about me being biased, I graduated from Sikeston in 1990 back when the Field House was nowhere near full and Sikeston was getting beat by everybody. It would be a great game that won't happen this year or anywhere in the near future because most of Sikeston school administrators are too arrogant and cocky to take a chance on getting bet by a class 1 school, even though that school can beat any class of school.

No one is scared to play anyone out of fear of losing. Certain administrators are scared of what they think could happen. Sikeston at Charleston will be ten times as bad as if SCC came to the Field House because of their rathole gym. To say Sikeston is scared of SCC is moronic. Holifield, Porter, and co. would probably play tomorrow if they could and Sikeston would beat them by 15...

I should know by now that Sikeston is a Class 4 school, so that was an oversight on my part. I made the fix to the blog above.

As for negative comments about Sikeston, I've never had any problems with the town or the teams. I do think Sikeston is digging in its heels over a possible Scott County Central game, and the reasons the school has given are lacking in reason.

I don't consider that to be a negative opinion, but just an opinion.

I'm not saying the players or coaches are scared, I honestly think they are all for it. I know some of the adminstration and I know how some are, not all just some of them, and yes it would be a blow to their ego if Sikeston got beat by SCC. I do believe if they played Sikeston would beat SCC in a close game. And the post after mine is what I'm talking about getting your panies in a bunch, just chill all of this is my opinion.

Keep pressing them Jamie. Every person and fan in Sikeston wants the game to happen, even if its next year when we aren't as great as this year.

Big Mike ways he would love nothing more than to play SCC here or there. All of the team feels like that. Schedual them asap

Baller:

Please do not call the Ronnie Cookson Gymnasium a rat hole. It is a new facility that we all are proud of. You may have never seen it. It is covered with 19 state basketball championships banners. 12 boys and 7 girls Hey Jamie, no big deal but, this season Oran moved up to Class 2 and they are happy to be there.

Drop oran and pick up scc

I find it funny that Cookson said "sure we have room on our 2009-2010 schedule." Well of course you would want to play us next year and not this year. I wouldn't want my team to play a team like Sikeston this year either!

I think the term rathole was referring to charleston and not SCC

EVERYBODY wants this game. The players, the coaches, the fans. Everybody but the Sikeston administrators. No, it has nothing to do with losing, contrary to what one of them said. That has NOTHING to do with it. All it has to do with is Sikeston administrators are tired. They are sick and tired of having to deal with packed houses every night and they don't want to deal with the headache that would be 3,000 plus screaming fans in the Field House. It's that simple. And it has NOTHING to do with a possible "fight" after the game. It's just pure and simple, they want a night off from the headaches associated with such a high profile contest.

The easiest solution to this is for SCC to get into the SEMO Conference. Even in down years, they would still be competitive and many years they would contend for the league title.

Why not talk with the Show Me center and reschedule a Redhawk game... they can't fill that gym why can't we... I have been a fan of playing at a neutral site since both would need to travel and have a big game atmosphere. If Sikeston could just agree to the meeting and a date that both SCC and them have off I think we could make this happen

ASAP

All I want for Christmas is my SCC, My SCC, My SCC

All I want for Christmas is my SCC... So Sikeston can stop their talking...

Cookson is a coward, wanting to play next year... Why not ask Cookson to give us available date this season and see if we can come to a quick solution. Not a duck and cover statment like we want too play next year...

Baller:

Quote: Cookson "As far as we're concerned, we would probably drop somebody just to pick them (Sikeston) up or reschedule somebody," said Cookson. "I have a couple of open dates that we could work with. It could've happened this year. We had an open date when we picked Ellington up."

Cookson can make a date if Sikeston says yes, we could have Thursday or a Saturday game.

This game would expose the truths.SCC has all the kids from sikeston that sikeston dont want attending there school. It would stir up alot of what everyone else in semo already know. 40% of SCC enrollment live in Sikeston

The article that Mills and a few more people wrote in the Sikeston Standard Democrat was one of the best I've seen in a while. Agreed?

I am a Sikeston fan, and if anyone is a coward, its Keefer. I have personally talked to Williams and Borgsmiller, and they really want to play. Borgs doesnt really care, but Keefer is the one preventing it.

Cookson is one of the greatest coaches to ever coach in Missouri. Don't call him a coward when we are afraid to schedual them...

Forgive the ignorant Sikeston fans, no one here feels ill towards Cookson. We all want it, and even if we lost, I'm sure our fans would bitch about something. The bad ones, at least. The real fans would just live with it.

I do wish Bobby, Marcus, and Dez played for Sikeston tho :)

It's really all these ignorant high school kids that give Sikeston a bad name. I've come to the conclusion that very few high school kids know what they're talking about. Again, the only people preventing this from happening is the Sikeston administration. The players and coaches would LOVE to do it.

Thanks to the INTELLIGENT Sikeston fans on here. I KNEW there were some.

The last couple of days I've been talking to Santa and asking for this game to happen this year for Christmas. I told him listen I'm fat your fat our kind need to stick together, help me out. Sadly, under my tree was no game. I did read the article in the Sikeston paper, and one thing that I thought was a great idea was playing the game for charity. Playing a regular season game at the Show-Me Center that seats 7000+ plus concessions and maybe even sponsors. After reading the article I believe the game will happen sometime in the future, but it won't be as big as if the game was played this year. Maybe Santa can talk to the Wizard of OZ and get some of the Sikeston administrators some courage and some brains. Eveyone have a safe and Merry Christmas.

Charleston's rat hole sure has been home to a lot victories over Sikeston. Heck, the Sikeston field house has been home to a lot of Charleston victories over Sikeston.

Some Sikeston fans need to get their head out of the clouds and their feet on the ground. The season is far from over and you do remember what happened in districts last year, don't you? Better deflate your head. That rat hole gym at Charleston could be a haunting for the reddogs.

This article written by the SD was very politically correct to say the least! Here is what transpired years and years ago... somebody got STABBED in the parking lot, there was a "riot" in the bathroom (not a fight), and the SCC bus had to be escorted out of town by the police. The players on that bus said they were "afraid for their life."

So SCC made the decision to not play again, and Sikeston obliged. Here are the very, very big problems playing this game... you have too many kids and families that are related, on both sides. Obviously you have the Porters this year, but in other years it is the Turners, the Blissetts, the McCrays, etc. Coach Cookson and his players would act right, and I have no doubt Coach Hollifield and his players would act right. It would be the fans that would be the problem.

Here is the other problem, and this is the dirty little secret... SCC does have a lot of Sikeston kids going to school out there, and several of them are on the roster right now. That is why I think Sikeston won't play them. Why get beat by SCC when Hatchett lives in Sikeston? Why get beat by SCC when they have probably hung a few banners with kids that should've started for the Bulldogs?

I think Sikeston looks down at SCC for that reason, and it is that contempt that keeps this game from happening. But it would be a great game!!! :)

don't live in sikeston anymore but I'm related to the turner's and my mom's best friend was a blissett. Both sides play ALOT of sports.

Anonymous said...

Jamie, your retarded if you think Sikeston doesn't want the matchup. Everyone wants it other than Keefer....

Anonymous said...

I just wonder how much better Sikeston's guard play would be if Hatchett would be playing for his home team? He could just walk to the games since he only lives 3 blocks from the Field House.

Anonymous said...

I wonder how good Sikeston would be if Porter and Lane hadn't moved in.

Anonymous said...

Nice answer...LOL

Probably not as good as they are now. But, like you said, at least they live IN Sikeston.

Another good question. Will Hatchett want to play for Sikeston next year when SCC graduates 10 of the 14 players on their roster?

Anonymous said...

Cal lived in Sikeston until he was 8, then moved with his mom. Now he moved back dumbass.

After watching SCC dismantle a weaker than normal Charleston team, I'd sure love to see a Sikeston-SCC game! Basketball players vs athletes--I'd take SCC if such a game were to happen. Michael Porter would get his points but the quickness of the Braves would just overwhelm the Bulldogs.

Okay, Sikeston--what say you?!!!!
