You pick: What's the best rivalry game in Southeast Missouri?

Just mentioning Sikeston and Notre Dame in the same sentence stirs emotions among basketball fans. It's always been that way when it comes to other rivalries: Jackson vs. Cape Girardeau Central, Valle vs. Ste. Genevieve, Caruthersville vs. Hayti.

Our next SemoSportsWeb.com poll next week will ask this question: "What's the best high school rivalry in Southeast Missouri?" Pick any rivalry among any of the 83 or so high schools in the region and leave a comment -- they might be included among the choices when our poll goes up in a few days.

• The first month of the high school basketball season hasn't seen many big surprises (Leopold's Woodland Invitational championship and Charleston's 1-4 start among them), but fifth-seeded Risco's defeat of top-seeded Gosnell, Ark., in the semifinal round of the Clarkton Holiday Tournament tonight might top the list.

At Risco, wins haven't been easy to come by over the past few seasons, but coach Brandon Blankenship has the Tigers off to a 6-1 start heading into Friday's championship game. Risco's matchup Jan. 9 at Leopold could be one of the better small-school matchups of the season.

And in case you haven't already seen the team in action, click here for the link to photographer Al Jones' gallery of more than two dozen photos from Risco's first-round game against Gideon earlier this week.

Talley Haines' new Balls-n-Strikes indoor baseball and softball facility in Cape Girardeau will hold its grand opening Sunday. Sikeston High grad and current Los Angeles Dodger Blake Dewitt will be there to sign autographs starting at 3 p.m.

• Thanks to coaches, fans and others who have contributed scores in the first month of the season — it's helped us put together the most thorough list of boys basketball results in the region. As always, scores from regular-season games and tournament games are appreciated; e-mail them to scores@semosportsweb.com, or send a text message from your cell phone any time to 573-979-5929.

If it is basketball, DEFINITELY

Sikeston vs. Notre Dame

Football...without a DOUBT it is the OLDEST RIVALRY west of the Mississippi, 123 years running....

Sikeston vs. Charleston

If we're talking currently, ND-Sikeston is obviously the biggest in basketball. But I don't think it is as long lived as some other rivalries, like Sikeston-Charleston, Cape Central-Jackson. Bell City-SCC was big for the last few years, but I don't think it's going to be much of a rivalry for the next few years...just a whoopin by SCC.

If I had to pick THE BEST rivalry game right now, I'd go with Notre Dame-Sikeston. Both are still competitive this year, and there is a very good possibility that they will meet in districts yet again.

Notre Dame/Sikeston in basketball. I'd have to go with the Cape Central/Jackson football rivalry only because the games are a little more competitive and the fans and students on both sides are always jam packed and lively.

Sikeston-ND. When one district decides who goes to the state finals, you know the teams, games, and rivalry are good. for football, I have to go with Sikeston-Charleston considering it has more history than almost any other in the state of Missouri and even the country. Jackson-Cape Central is a pretty good one too, especially when the student sections go at it, although their chants can be pretty vulgar (Sikeston girls have STDs?). This part of the state has lots. If only Sikeston-SCC could renew theirs.

Yeah, Cape-Jackson games get pretty nasty...I've heard of cars painted (actual paint, not that window paint stuff) and tires slashed in the parking lot at some of their games.

Unlike the past 2 or 3 years, the winner of Class 4 District 1 is by no means a lock to go to Columbia this year. To make it to Columbia, the winner will likely have to go through Borgia, who is supposed to be one of the best teams in the state. The road to Columbia, and to the championship game, got a lot harder this year.

Nothing comes close to Sikeston-ND or Sikeston Ctown

the charleston-sikeston football rivalry may be the oldest west of the Mississippi, but it has lost its luster over the last decade; crowds are much smaller; games not as intense; week-long buildup is absent

charleston-sikeston basketball always draws huge crowds; ND-Sikeston has become the biggest rivalry due to their being district foes

If sikeston beating another top 10 team doens't propell them over ND, idk what will.

Anonymous said...

Is Sikeston not already ranked ahead of ND in the poll? Where is the whole propelling over ND thing coming in here? I'm lost.

Anonymous said...

Yeah, it's a common theme across these blogs. You have a few ignorant folks arguing just for the sake of arguing, even if they have NO CLUE what they're arguing about.

As far as history goes it's without a doubt Sikeston vs. Charleston and Cape Central vs. Jackson in any sport. But as for the last couple of years with a trip to state on the line it's been Sikeston vs. ND and Bell City vs. SCC, and both rivalries being just as good as the other.

propell them over SCC***
Farmboy were you at the game? Thats what I thought. It was a murdering.

Anonymous said...

Yeah, I was. It was a good game until a couple minutes into the 4th, if you call that a "murdering". Just a tip, trying to be a bad@ss on an Internet forum not only makes you look like an idiot, it perpetuates the feelings that a lot of people already have about Sikeston fans.

Anonymous said...

They are alot like ND fans... really proud of their teams but act like idiots... then you get on here and act like ND ambassador of good sportsmanship... Down year for ND and you become a good sport... I don't like Sikeston or ND... I think all of their fans are cocky and stuck up... the administrators at the Sikeston games are rude and overprotective of a court that is not that important... ND students are all from surrounding towns that if they would stay at their own local school then the class 1,2 &3 games might be closer. I think SCC is the best team in SEMO and if they played Sikeston they would run them up and down the floor without breaking a sweat. Farmboy just shut up and all you Dog fans just need to rest and be lucky you don't play SCC.

Anonymous said...

yeah....one less team we have to beat

Anonymous said...

DId you see the T Farmboy? Or the ND player spike the ball and cuss on his way off the court? I think I would rather have a player hang on the rim and point to his own fans than one act like that. And the coach didnt even take him out of the game. But I am sure there is a valid reason why you aren't bashing them like you do Porter or the Sikeston students.

Anonymous said...

FarmBoy... Like the Sikeston bums said last night... What towns he from.... What towns he from.... Must be a alumni of Notre Dame... Bleeding a little blue...

Anonymous said...

Haha, sikeston would win. It seems like yoru a SCC fan. I believe stown beat them more times then they did, so it doenst matter.

Big mike would drop 50 im sure. And the bench would outscore SCC's by about 20

Anonymous said...

Mike isn't even the best Porter in the county... SCC RULZ

Anonymous said...

FarmBoy, just shut up. Seriously man, you're no better than the rest of us. All you ever do is get on here and bash the fans from other teams. Yeah, I support Sikeston with all my heart, but I'm not on here constantly defending them from fans from other places. I'll comment when I feel like a comment from me would contribute but I don't just bash everyone else. Learn to beat them, not join them.

Anonymous said...

"Mike isn't even the best Porter in the county" Really? I'm all for supporting your team, cause I'm all about the Sikeston Bulldogs. But I use common sense. I know when some team is better than Sikeston like ND was the last two years. But there is no way anyone with just a shred of common sense would think that Otto jr. is better than Mike.

Anonymous said...

Your nose is really to brown being up Michael's butt... Open your eyes and let me know if you have even seen Otto play yet... I bet you have not... Shut Up all Sikeston and ND fans other teams in this area have what it takes to beat you guys this year and any other year.

WOW Farmboy and you Sikeston fans are MORONS

Anonymous said...

Yes I've seen Otto jr. play several times and he's not even the best player on SCC. As for my nose being brown ,it's not. But as I said in my previous post I use common sense and just think if you had'nt rode the little yellow school bus and had to wear velcro shoes all your life you could use it to.

Anonymous said...

Hahahhaha
Not only is he the best porter, he is the best player in the county by far.

Who else is gonna be a 4 time first team all state player in scott county, or in the state for that matter?

Anonymous said...

Otto is good, but he will tell you himself Mike is better. I kno him personally and he admits it.

He'll be a fine player though.

Anonymous said...

Otto is a really good player, but he's nowhere near Michael right now. Maybe next year he'll be on that level, but right now it's not close.

When Michael was a sophomore he was dropping 36 on Kony Ealy and Portageville, 29 on Ryan Willen and Notre Dame. Big difference than the teams SCC plays.

Anonymous said...

Across all sports, which I believe this poll will be for, I'd go with Valle/SG or Jackson/Cape Central

Sure, ND/Sikeston in bball, Sikeston/Charleston in football...but for ALL sports (boys and girls) those two always have something on the line...town pride.

Anonymous said...

Sikeston vs. Notre Dame but to the sikeston fans i would have to say the "where is he from" chant is completely rediculous considering the player it was chanted at went to a Catholic grade school, so why wouldn't he go to Notre Dame?give me a break

Anonymous said...

I have to agree with the people who said Otto isn't as good as Michael right now. Obviously Otto is younger, but I think Michael was probably more developed at that point in high school. That being said, I think Otto has the POTENTIAL to be the better player by the time he's a senior, but right now there's no question, Mike has the edge.

Anonymous said...

How about when ND said Sikeston couldn't spell sophomore before that one bud? Thats what started it.

Oh, and we didn't recruit Mike, so thats another "bad" thing ND said.

any more questions? Thank you

Anonymous said...

We didn't say he was recruited, we just simply wanted to know where he was from. just trying to be friendly...

Anonymous said...

Students at ND from Cape Girardeau only make up about half the enrollment so naturally some of the athletes are not going to be from Cape, and that doesn't mean they were recruited at all, most out-of-town students went to Catholic grade schools and have Catholic backgrounds
